Cycling the Erie Canal – July 2013

EC05

At 6:15AM on Saturday, July 6 Howie, Bob Stevens, Lee & Peter Delfausse left Vermont on their way to Albany. They moved their bikes and gear to a rental car and drove to Buffalo and set up their tents at the Nichols School.

The following morning they set out on a 400 mile 8 day ride with 500-600 other cyclists to the Niagara River and the Erie Canal. Mid morning they reached the first of two daily rest stops and snacked on beverages, fruit and cookies.

After a night dining, tenting and breakfasting in Medina they cycled to Pittsford with a side trip to downtown Rochester.

On day three from Pittsford to Seneca Falls we caught up many of our many new friends at at a morning rest stop. Here are the youngest and oldest cyclists sharing a bench.

Between Syracuse and Rome we visited the Erie Canal Village where Howie was photographed with Rita, who toured with her son in 2007 and this time with daughter Martina.

On Saturday night in Scotia the participants put on a talent show which included the most talented of our Vermont contingent.

On Sunday we cycled along the Mohawk river and through farmland on our way to the finish line in Albany.
